Young Adult Volunteer
Position description: The volunteers are placed in the metropolitan city of Daejeon, in the central region of the country. During the current phase of rapid economic growth in Korea, many sectors of Korea developed in uneven pace resulting in large gaps between communities. YAV placements are selected and designed to offer opportunities to young adult volunteers to recognize these disparate circumstances and contribute to the community with Christian perspectives. Intensive language training will be offered at the beginning of the service year. Most placements will include teaching or assisting with the English language and participation in the worship lives of local churches. Some volunteers will work alongside Korean young adult partners.
Essential job tasks and
responsibilities:
The volunteers will be placed in educational institutions, local churches, after-school programs and community development programs. They will also have opportunities to relate to a worshipping community. Specific examples of work in which volunteers can engage include: teaching English, writing and editing web-based publications in English and preparation of newsletters. Individual assignments will be shaped with sufficient flexibility to enrich the volunteer’s experience and personal growth while at the same time witnessing Christ’s love in the community.
Mission description: The Presbyterian Church of Korea is a long-standing partner of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The PC(USA) joins Korea's Christian community in a ministry that includes new church development, higher education and youth ministries, theological education, health ministries, women's and children's ministries, food aid, and peace education, reconciliation and reunification work.

While most Koreans are followers of Buddhism or a traditional religion, the country’s Christian faith goes back 220 years, to the beginning of the Catholic mission in Korea. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) itself celebrates over a century of ministry in Korea.

Position benefits:

Housing:
The volunteers will be initially housed on the campus of the Hannam University during the initial period of training. Later, depending on their service location, the volunteers will live with host families or other housing options which are approved by the site coordinator, which may include efficiency apartments.
