Amity Teacher (Summer)
Position description: The Amity Foundation Summer English Program offers oral English training for Chinese Middle School teachers from small cities and rural areas. This program gives volunteers an opportunity both to teach and to learn in a 4-week intensive English program in a variety of locations in China during the summer. Amity teachers work in teams of 4-6 persons to present this challenging but rewarding in-service training opportunity for Chinese colleagues while learning from them about China.
The conditions in China in the summer can be very demanding. The temperature is often in excess of 90 degrees F. Classrooms are not usually airconditioned. Teachers need to have the stamina to teach and to travel for long hours.
Essential job tasks and
responsibilities:
-Work together with other teachers as a team.
-Teach English to Chinese teachers
-Give Chinese teachers a chance to speak with native English speakers
-Learn about China and Chinese culture from the teacher students
-Live out a Christian presence without proselytizing
Mission description: The Amity Foundation, an independent Chiness voluntary organization was created in 1985 on the initiative of Chinese Christians to promote education, social services, health, and rural development from China's coastal provinces in the east to the minority areas of the west.

China is a huge country covering approximately 3.7 million square miles. The Amity Foundation works in numerous locations throughout the People's Republic of China.

Required experience, licenses and
certifications:
- Experience teaching is very helpful.
- Teachers must be willing to observe laws and ordinance of the Chinese government, including refraining from any activity of a proselytizing nature.
- Good health and willingness to work under difficult conditions.
- The age limit for first-time teachers is 68. Amity will accept teachers younger than 73 is they have previous experience in the program.
- Amity cannot place teachers who plan to bring children or spouses with them.
Ecclesiastical status:
Required education and languages:
-Teachers must have at least an undergraduate degree. If a team has several experienced teachers, one non-degreed person can be sent with the team as a teaching assistant.
-Must be a native English speaker.
Position benefits:
This is a volunteer position. The volunteer will be responsible for paying for airfare and for a fee to Amity which will cover orientation, in-country travel, food and accomodations in China, and a debriefing at the end of the program. This fee was $1000.00 for the summer of 2004. PC(USA) will supply the volunteer with risk management coverage.

Housing will be arranged by the Amity Foundation.
