Short-Term Volunteer (International)
Position description: In this position, the volunteer as a native speaker teacher would work with the staff of the new Language Center at the University during the critical transition stage and support and assist the other Indonesian staff and the Leadership to continue to develop the programs at the UKIT and also give suggestions to further improve the current programs.
Essential job tasks and
responsibilities:
The volunteer would be expected to teach both in the University's Language Center and in the Teacher Training and Education Faculty, which is a degree program. The volunteer would teach 2 or 3 classes in the Language center and 2 or 3 classes in the faculty. In the Language Center, all of the classes are team taught, so the volunteer would work together with another instructor at the Language Center. All materials will be provided and for the most part the courses have already been developed.
In the faculty, the volunteer would be teaching independently, but materials are available and there is a good resource library. The courses that the volunteer would teach would depend on their background but it is likely the classes would include basic English (including reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and vocabulary skills) as well as a class called “cross-cultural understanding” and perhaps some literature, linguistics or education classes as they fit the background and education of the volunteer.
The volunteer would be expected to attend regular meetings in the Language Center and the faculty, and would be expected to participate in various events and worship services at the university. The volunteer would be asked to help proofread various materials written in English by the Indonesian staff of the Language center or the faculty program.
Mission description: GMIM is the largest reformed Protestant church in North Sulawesi and the second largest Protestant church in Indonesia. As part of the mission of GMIM, the church runs 2 hospitals, hundreds of private schools, several schools for the handicapped and one university.
The university, UKIT, is under the GMIM synod and part of the overall mission of the church. UKIT has a number of different programs of study, including the largest program for the study of theology in Eastern Indonesia. Many pastors throughout all of Indonesia have been trained at UKIT.
Specifically, UKIT’s mission is to provide quality higher education to future Christian leaders of Indonesia. In recent years, the programs for teaching English have become an important focus. Knowledge of English is vital to Christians not only for finding jobs, but also for any kind of college-level or graduate study.

Minimally a BA degree from a liberal arts program or a BA majoring in English or a relevant field.
Knowledge of Indonesian is not required for this position at the time of appointment and is not required for the candidate to be able to successfully fulfill the duties.
Knowledge of TESOL techniques highly preferred.
Position benefits:
The short-term volunteer would have minimal risk management insurance provided. Health and evacuation insurance are the responsibility of the volunteer.
