Position description: Oversee care of facilities, including the church building with sanctuary, fellowship halls, kitchen and dormitories; a small apartment; and the retreat house, with office and living space.

Essential job tasks and responsibilities: Ongoing care, including: routine maintenance tasks: cleaning, overseeing volunteer project groups, light bulbs, smoke detector batteries, security; minor construction, such as building shelves or painting; grounds care; organization and clearing of old storage, and ambassador to the neighborhood.

Mission description: UrbanSpirit is a non-denominational church in a challenged urban neighborhood, focused on poverty education. That is, rather than trying to convert people to a particular kind of faith, we help people who are not poor, and who already claim a faith, to explore the reality of life at the poverty line in America in the context of faith. We work with community agencies, welcome groups from all over the country, hold regular book groups, conduct training events – all to bring new perspectives and make good neighbors.

Description of program location: Portland is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Louisville, where urban development and white flight have taken a toll. Its residents are a mix of black and white; they are mostly poor. There are a variety of agencies that provide services to the residents; there are almost no mainline congregations left. We are about 2 miles from downtown Louisville, close to all sorts of entertainment, and accessible by interstate to all of Louisville. Facilities include: church building w/ dorms; retreat house; one-BR apartment on-site.

Housing:  Room and board in a renovated 1910s 4-bedroom home adjacent to church. Fully furnished, central H/AC, fenced yard, security system. Dog welcome! (May be shared with another mission volunteer.)
